Final Post in American Bombers!!! B-2 Stelth Bomber

Hello all, here is the FINAL POST in the American bombers series. (Note: I am planning an article on the irrevelent bombers that where not inculded in this series!!!

The B-2 Stelth Bomber

The B-2 was born out of a project for a medum- to high altitude replacement for the B-1(which was a low-altitude bomber.) It had to be invisible to radar, and that cost severel hunderds of millions of dollars(US!) It could carry few bombs compared to the B-1 and B-52.

Click on the link above to see a page on the B-2. It is from www.howstuffworks.com

The B-1 Lancer

Hello!!! This post is my second-last post in the "American Bomber Series."

The B-1 Lancer

The B-1 is one of the greatest penertration bomber ever. It is a large, sweep-wing bomber that had a massive range for it's day. It also could carry TWICE the bombload of the B-52.

The XB-70 Vakeliri

The XB-70 Vakeliri

The XB-70 was built as a high-level supersonic(Mach 3!!!) bomber to be used as a nuclear replacement for the B-52. Although it was a great plane in all it's test flights, it had to compete with the MiG 25 and the Soviet SAM missiles. It was never built, due to the amount of missiles entering SAC's inventory.

The B-58 Hustler

The B-58 Hustler

The B-58 was a supersonic replacement for the B-47 Stratojet. It could break the sound barrier but did not have the range to carry out its role of penertraion bombing. It was retirerd in the early 70's.

The B-57 Canberra

The B-57 Canberra
The B-57 was built in the Mosqutio tratiton, so fast and so high that it would need no defencive armorment. It was first built for the RAF as it's first jet bomber, but could not carry the new British atomic bomb. It was in service with the RAF, RAAF and the USAF.

The B-52 Stratofortress

The B-52 Stratofortress

The B-52 was built as a turboprop powered successor to the B-50(an improved B-29.) Later, turboprops where added and Boeing built the best heavy bomber ever. Although the B-1 could carry a larger bomb load, the B-52 is the best. Feared by the Viet Cong and the Iraq republican guard, the B-52 was used in all the US-involved, post Korea 21st century conflicts.

The B-47 Stratojet

Sorry; I have not been able to post recintly:

The B-47 Stratojet:

The B-47 was one of the first pure jet powered bombers. It had a short range, so it relied on IFR. It was phased out in 1965, due to the B-52 and the amount of ICBM's entering SAC's invertory.

The B-36 Peacemaker

The B-36 Peacemaker

The Peacemaker, one of the largest planes ever made, was first suggested in WW2 as a plane that could drop bombs on Erope from mainland USA. It edventually could fly for 15 hours, longer than the other bombers at the time. It was used in the Cold War as a strategic bomber deterrant and a recon plane. The Peacemaker never dropped bombs in anger.
Note: Most versions of the Peacemaker had 6 props and 4 jets, but the earler ones had olny 6 props.

This Peacemaker, is one of the one with jets. Peacemakers flew near, probably over the USSR during the Cold War. They where also a great recon plane.

The B-26 "Widowmaker"

Hi, when I get home from VP day celebrations, I will post about it(pictures will be coming soon.)

The B-26 Widomaker
Few planes have served in two manjor wars, some have but olny a handful have served in three. The B-26 is one of these planes. Suggested as a two-engine tactical bomber, the B-26 served with the US 9th(tactical) air force in World War Two and was used in Korea and Veitnam under the desingnation A-26.

The B-25 Mitchell

Hi, sorry about this last-second new plane (see note at end)

The B-25 Mitchell
Named after Colonel Billy Mitchell (a pre-war strategic bombing advocate), the B-25 was the standard modern bomber of WW2. Used in both Europe and the Pacific, the B-25 was made famous for being launched off carriers during the Doolittle raid and striking on the heart of Japan, only days after Pearl Harbor. This raid was immortilized in the movie Pearl Harbor.

Next, expect an article on VP day celebrations here in Australia.
Note that I forgot two bombers (B-25 and B-26) and they are being "added into" the series. The B-26 is next!

The B-24 Liberator

Hi, have a look at this article on the B-24

The B-24 Liberator
Quite possibly the most mass produced plane ever, the B-24 entered service just before the B-24 and is probably the most underatted plane of WW2. The Eighth Air Force, operated many of these massive planes and total production reached 18,000

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

This is a short article. Anyhow, please read it.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

The B-17 originated from the Boeing Model 299, which was unveiled in 1934. When it first entered service in WW2, it had a shorter range and smaller bomb load than the B-24 Liberator. During the period from 1942 to 1945 it was the 8th Air Force's main strategic bomber.

When the B-17 was used in anger against the Germans it was feared by Germany due to it's heavy firepower. During the runs on Dresden, Collone and Hamburg, the B-17 was used to massive effect by the USAAF and killed many people.

When it was replaced by the B-29 and B-36, it was considered one of the best bombers; ever.

Next, expect an article on the B-24, the second plane in my US Bombers series!

Some cool new sites

Here is one for wannabe model makers.

P-51 Mustang

Sorry, this is my first "real" post in about a month. Anyhow, here is the new article on the P-51 Mustang.

The North American P-51 Mustang

1: Humble Beginnings:
The P-51 was suggested originally for the RAF, for the low-level tactical recon role. This was mainly because it's current engines could not handles high-level flight. When North American fitted them with more modern Merlin engines, these problems where solved.

2: "As soon as I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the war was won"

The Mustang soon relieved the P-47 Thunderbolt in escort duties. The new Mustangs, with drop tanks could fly to the heart of Germany and back. They could out maneuver and outgun any Luftwaffe fighter and shot down some Me 262 jet fighters. The Mustang lost a advantage, due to the new Fokker-Wolf Fw 190, that had some advantages. But, the P-51 was used in greater numbers than the 190. It was used to escort B-17's and B-24's and was used to escort B-29's in the
Pacific theater.

3: The end of a long life

P-51's(now designated F-51's) where the USAF's main fighter in early Korea and
was soon replaced by the F-80 (which was soon replaced by the F-86.) They where used in the 1970's by the Indonesian Air Force. The original blueprint was so good, that in 1968 it was brought back as an anti rebel fighter.
